I recently purchased a Second Empire home with a slate mansard roof that was built in 1876. I'm told that the slate is in good condition and (http://maplered.com) that it will far outlive me. My problem is that a previous owner painted it (twice!). I imagine the reason for this was to cover areas where they had patched some spots with tar (instead of repairing them properly). I have yet to find a contractor in my area who has ever dealt with this or is willing to give it a try. Is it possible/practical to remove the paint from the slate? If so, how would I go about it? I'd hate to replace it since early photographs show that it is heavily patterned, very ornate. Thanks. Gene
